ExtraGive is November 17!

Milanof-Schock Library will be participating in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, November 17. One extraordinary day each year, for 24 hours, Lancaster County is transformed into a community-wide celebration of generosity that supports hundreds of community benefit organizations like ours.

Milanof-Schock Public Library receives only 50% of it’s annual funding from government allocations, and the rest is up to us. We use ExtraGive donations for anything from paying for heat and air conditioning to purchasing materials for the public collection, from snow removal to lawn maintenance, and from electricity to paper products. Your donation help keeps the Library open to the public.

We hope that you will consider making a donation on this day. Whether it’s $10 or more, you will be contributing to our library’s future. And we thank you!

If you would like to make a donation to the Library but do not participate in the ExtraGive, we accept donations year-round!

Visit www.extragive.org on Friday, November 17 from 12am to 11:59pm.

EXTRAGIVE 2022

From the Director, Joseph McIlhenney:

Milanof-Schock Library has participated in the ExtraGive since the beginning, and this will be my second year. When talking to folks about ExtraGive, I’m often asked, “What do I support when I make a donation to Milanof-Schock Library through ExtraGive?”

That’s an excellent question, and not easy to answer. Your neighborhood library is about books and reading, but that is only where our service begins. This past summer a pair of friendly Alpacas and Cylo from the Barnstormers visited the library for programs along with the Bloodmobile, a Ukulele player, a fiddler, Irish Dancers and so many other programs that I can’t list ‘em all in this space. Milanof-Schock Library is proud to offer a community place that is both social and a quiet place to read.

Your ExtraGive support to Milanof-Schock Library allows your library to continue offering books, DVDs, audiobooks, Wi-Fi, public computers, and so much more. Whether you are looking for children’s books, enjoy e-books or long for the feel of the printed page, need to visit a website or print out an on-line form, want to find new recipes for apple pie or want to know how to build a house, the library is here to help.

I cannot imagine a place where your donation does so many different things at once.

The Extraordinary Give is Lancaster’s community-wide event when nearly 500 organizations serving people across Lancaster County come together in a celebration of generosity. Online donations will be taken beginning at midnight up until 11:59pm. Please consider supporting Milanof-Schock Library, on this special day. www.extragive.org

Courtyard Legacy Bricks

Be a permanent part of your favorite local library!

We are offering community members the opportunity to purchase a Legacy Brick that will be part of our Library Courtyard currently in the construction process.

Does your family love the Library? Purchase a brick with your names on it. Do you know someone who loves this Library? A Legacy Brick would be a great gift in that person’s honor. Maybe you’ve known a Library lover who has passed away? Purchase a Brick to honor their memory.

“Shelf Control” Cash Appeal

This year’s Cash Appeal at the Benefit Auction was for the replacement of sagging bookshelves in the Children’s Area of the Library. Auction attendees were asked to donate cash toward this specific cause, and we were touched by the monetary donations made at the event. If you would like to participate in this Appeal and make a donation to be used for the shelving project, please contact Kim Beach at kbeach@mountjoy.lib.pa.us or call the Library at 717-653-1510.

19th Annual Benefit Auction News

The annual auction is coming back to the Library where it all began nineteen years ago, with big tents outside on the lawn and a sense of community in the air. Our 2021 theme is “We’re Still Standing … Better Than We Ever Did!” (If you are hearing Elton John right now, that is our plan!) The event will be held outdoors on the Library grounds with food and beverage items for purchase, free fun activities and games for families, and tents for some much-needed shade. There are no tickets for this event – the cost to attend is $0.00 and bidder numbers are free. We will have items up for auction similar to past years, as well as some family-friendly items as well. The event will be emceed by the great Stan Tucker, and we’re adding a few fun twists to the day! We are so happy to have John M. Hess Auction Service back to add some entertainment to the bidding.
We have some amazing sponsors this year, and a very special thank you goes out to them all: Gold Sponsors – Cargill Cocoa and Chocolate North America, Eshleman Mental Health Consulting, Lanco Federal Credit Union, Merchandiser/townlively, Mount Joy Lions, Rita’s of Mount Joy Silver Sponsors – Donegal Animal Hospital, Edward Jones, Mount Joy Foot and Ankle
Make sure to put the event on your calendar – item preview begins at 9am, the auction begins at 10:30am, and there will be a finale you won’t want to miss!

Celebrate Seuss – A Library Adventure!

Milanof-Schock Library is celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday a little differently this year. Instead of a Green Eggs and Ham breakfast, the Library is excited to be offering the family-friendly event on Friday, March 5 from 5-7:30“Celebrate Seuss – a Library Adventure!” Tickets for the fundraising event are just $5/person and will include a pass through the maze, hands-free games, activities, prizes, a goodie bag for each child, and a treat for adults as well! Each person will also receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a Gus’s Family Restaurant gift card. Meet the characters: The Grinch, Thing 1 & Thing 2, Horton, Gertrude McFuzz, The Fox, and of course the Cat in the Hat! Kids (and parents, too) are invited to wear costumes to celebrate their favorite characters; masks will be required to participate. Tickets go on sale February 8 and need to be purchased in advance.

Remember us on Extra Give Day, November 16!

The Library is joining hundreds of other county non-profit organizations for the Extraordinary Give, Lancaster County’s largest day of online giving! We encourage you to donate to groups that are near to your heart, and we hope that includes Milanof-Schock Library. Please keep in mind that government funds only half of our budget, and the remaining 50% must be earned through fundraisers. Life-enriching services and books are provided to the community at no cost to its residents, and when we get together and give together, a little can go a long way!

What is the Extraordinary Give?   The Lancaster Community Foundation hosts the “Extraordinary Give” for local community benefit organizations because they are invested in bringing awareness to the community benefit organizations that make the community a vibrant place to live, work, and play. Community benefit organizations play a huge role in all our lives and as a Community Foundation, they are deeply dedicated to supporting the good work that they do.

The aim of the Extraordinary Give program is to:  Raise the level of knowledge about community benefit organizations in our county and highlight their positive impact on our well-being.
Support the operating needs of community benefit organizations that serve Lancaster County through at least $500,000 of stretch pool dollars and $50,000 in prizes from the Foundation, our presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates and the High Foundation, and other community supporters.
Grow the base of engaged donors in Lancaster – bringing new donors to our community benefit organizations.
Spotlight the charitable trends in our community. Where are we giving? What are our community benefit organizations saying is vital and needed right now?

In just 6 days of giving, the Extraordinary Give has raised more than $31 MILLION for organizations across our community! Thanks to Presenting Sponsors Rodgers & Associates, the High Foundation, and other supporters, this year will offer the biggest Stretch Pool to date at more than $500,000. Mark your calendars for November 16, 2018 as we work together to make this the biggest Extraordinary Give yet!
