Volunteer at Milanof-Schock!

Why Volunteer at the Library?

Public libraries do more than just lend books—they serve as hubs of learning, connection, and support. At Milanof-Schock Library, our dedicated volunteers power these vital roles every day. When you volunteer, you don’t just shelve materials or assist at events—you actively make a real difference. You support lifelong learners and keep community programs running smoothly.

By volunteering, you gain new skills, meet people from all walks of life, and become part of something meaningful. Whether you want to give back, build your resume, or simply share your love of books, the library needs your time and talents.

Join us and discover how just a few hours of your time can create a lasting impact—both for others and for yourself.

Volunteer Opportunities

Shelving Books

As a volunteer shelver, you commit to a regular weekly schedule, coming into the library on a set day and time. You return books and other materials to their proper places on the shelves, keeping our collection organized and accessible. You may also help by shelf reading to ensure items are in order and pulling requested holds for patrons. Be prepared to reach both bottom and top shelves as part of the role.

*NEW* Adopt a Bookshelf

If you’re looking for a flexible way to make a difference, this role is a great fit! You choose your own hours—just stop in any time the library is open. We’ll assign you a shelf or section based on your preference, and you’ll take charge of keeping it tidy and in proper order. You help us maintain a welcoming, organized space for everyone who visits.

Grounds Crew / Gardening

If you enjoy working outside, this is a great way to get involved! You’ll help keep the library grounds clean and beautiful by watering flowerbeds, pulling weeds, and tending to the butterfly garden. You can also choose to care for our whimsical fairy garden as an optional task. Your work helps create a welcoming, vibrant space for all who visit.

Light Housekeeping

As a housekeeping volunteer, you help keep the inside of the library clean and welcoming. You dust surfaces, tidy shelves, and take care of general housekeeping tasks. You may also take on light office work to support daily operations.

Helping at Special Events

As a special events volunteer, you stay ready to jump in and help with fun, community-focused programs like Seuss Night, auctions, Summer Reading events, and Santa’s Visit. We’ll contact you in advance to coordinate your schedule and availability, so you can be part of the excitement when it works best for you.

Join the Friends Group

A group of enthusiastic volunteers, the Friends of Milanof-Schock Library actively support and promote the library, driven by their love for it and their passion for its growth and development. Join today!

How to Become a Volunteer

Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. Background checks are required for those over 18.

Those interesting in becoming a volunteer can fill out our Volunteer Application and email it to info@mslibrary.org or drop it off at the circulation desk. Applicants will be contacted to come in for a short, informal interview to discuss volunteer opportunities that will fit for you!

To get onboard quicker, please obtain your Child Abuse Clearance and the PA State Police Criminal History Background Check ahead of your interview. Both background checks are free for volunteers.

Currently, we do not have volunteer opportunities for those needing to complete court ordered community service. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.
