Puzzle Swap with Us!

Puzzle Swap at the Library!
We now have a puzzle swap in the ALPS (Adult Library Patron Space)! Bring a puzzle (all the pieces, please!) and take a puzzle – this is perfect for puzzle-lovers who need a new challenge but don’t want to spend the money on new ones. If you don’t have any at home to swap, we invite you to borrow one using the honor system.

Fall Reading at the Library

The Summer Reading Program and Adult Summer Reading Olympics were so popular that we have created interactive reading for all ages at the Library this fall!

We are “falling” back into reading with another fun program that encourages children to read at least 20 minutes a day. Pick up papers at the front desk October 18 thru November 27, turn in completed papers (more than one is awesome!) to earn a book prize and to be eligible for the grand prize drawing in December. This challenge is for kids in grades K-12. Click here for printable pdf.

The Adult Summer Reading Olympics were so well-received that we are continuing with monthly reading challenges thru to next summer! Pick up entry forms at the Library; one winner chosen each month. Please make sure to check our social media pages for new challenges, stop by the Library, or give us a call!

The first challenges of Autumn are:
Oct 1 – 15: Read or listen to a book that says autumn to you
Oct 16 – 31: Read or listen to a book about a classic monster

Friends Make Donation

Friends Group president Joyce Summers (left) and treasurer Marilyn Barnett (right) presented MSL director Joseph McIlhenney with a check for $21,000. This amount was the proceeds from their summer Used Book Sale. They also gave the Library a donation in the name of three devoted Friends who have passed – Donna Little, Janet Jarvie, and Dorothy Allen. The Library is grateful for the Friends and their dedication, hard work, and service to our Library!

Important Passport News

If you think you might need or want a passport in the near future, getting it done now would be a great idea. The government turn-around time is very slow right now, even for expedited passports. Call the Library to schedule an appointment with one of our licensed agents sooner rather than later.

First Finishers of the Milanof-Schock Mile Punch Card

Congratulations to the first two Library patrons who completed their Milanof-Schock Mile Punch Cards! Angela and Jake earned 10 punches each in the adult and child categories; Angela earned MSL Cash to be used toward a book purchase, and Jake earned a free book – he chose a Magic Tree House! There is still plenty of time to participate. Pick up your punch card at the Library!

Walk the Milanof-Schock Mile

We’ve mapped out a 1-mile route for anyone who wants to walk a neighborhood mile starting from and returning to the Library! The first 2 weeks we’ve given the incentive of prize eligibility, and now that you know the route you can walk or jog it any time!
Coming in for story time? Encourage other families to walk the mile afterward! Dropping off or picking up books? Walk the mile! Just need a nice walk through the neighborhood? Park at the Library and take the walk. Now you know. 🙂

Memory – March 14, 2020

We remember March 14, 2020

Does anyone remember this day, one year ago today, when the Library was getting ready to close for a couple of weeks? The uncertainty of what was happening was a bit scary, but what we, as a Library staff, felt that day was pretty amazing. So many people rushed to the Library to checkout books and movies and learning resources to keep themselves or families entertained. The “new” bookshelves were emptied, large gaps appeared on shelves throughout the Library as people came to the checkout counter with arms full and bags filled. The lines were long all day, but there were no complaints. It was a day when we felt how essential we were to people in our community, and even people from other towns whose libraries had already closed with little warning. Would it surprise you to know that we checked out 4,072 items in the few hours that we were open on that Saturday?
We are so happy that we didn’t have to stay closed for too long, that we took precautions, followed guidelines and protocols, provided fun videos through social media, and opened to the public in June. We will continue to follow guidelines for the safety of all, and as the saying goes, “This, too, shall pass.”
This month we returned to all in-person programs and clubs for adults and kids – hooray! We are excited to welcome spring and the warmer weather that is on its way so that we can take our programs back outside to the lawn and fresh air. Thank you for staying with us these last few months, for your patience as we navigated this chapter in our shared story, and for your generosity thru contributions both financial and in the form of books. The strength and sense of community around us is inspiring.

Library Receives Grant

Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy recently added a large selection of adult and children’s books to its public collection. Funding has been provided by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020. Books purchased with the provided funds cover a variety of genres and topics in both fiction and nonfiction.

As part of the national Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), which became law on March 27, 2020, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) received $75 million to distribute to humanities-based nonprofits that have been financially impacted by the coronavirus. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) received a portion of these emergency relief funds to grant to the statewide public humanities community. Called PHC CARES, this fund will help sustain Pennsylvania’s cultural infrastructure by supporting humanities organizations during this unprecedented time.

The Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) is an independent nonprofit partner of the National
Endowment for the Humanities and part of a network of 56 state humanities councils that spans the nation and U.S. jurisdictions. We put the humanities in action to create positive change in our lives and communities. They believe the humanities inspire people to grow their potential and shape an equitable society. Their work is grounded in people and champions their creativity and big ideas, and they bring Pennsylvanians together to shape the future through the power of stories, reflection, and relationships.
