In the Middle of Miss Jan’s Retirement and End-Of-Summer-Reading Bash on August 16, she was given a very special surprise presentation. Mayor Bradley announced Saturday, August 16 2025 as “Jan Betty Day” in Mount Joy. The proclamation reads:
Mayoral Recognition
WHEREAS, individuals who give of their time, talents, and energies in service to their communities are a priceless asset that cannot be sufficiently thanked; and,
WHEREAS, Jan Betty, affectionately known as “Miss Jan,” has devoted decades to inspiring, educating, and entertaining generations of children and families in the Borough of Mount Joy; and,
WHEREAS, beginning in the 1990s as a volunteer Library Story Time leader, Miss Jan became the Director of Children and Youth in 1999, bringing her background in theater and musical performance to make learning an engaging and joyful experience; and,
WHEREAS, her outreach efforts have touched thousands, from schools and nursery centers to community events, parades, and literacy campaigns, including organizing the local “Read for the Record” program and creating award-winning floats for the Mount Joy Memorial Day Parade; and,
WHEREAS, Miss Jan’s creativity and dedication have been evident in her beloved roles such as The Cat in the Hat, “Señorita Juanita,” and the ever-ready “One-Take Jan,” as well as her willingness to don costumes, embrace silly moments, and even take a pie in the face to support the Library; and,
WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she continued to engage the community with narrated stories, STEM projects, and memorable readings—including to cows at Brubaker Farms and cats at the Columbia Animal Shelter—proving her boundless imagination and commitment; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to her Library service, Miss Jan has contributed her talents as a choir director, singer, martial arts instructor, and active member of the Norlanco-Rheems Kiwanis Club; and,
WHEREAS, her programs have blended literature, music, art, science, dance, and her love of life to make reading fun and the Library a beloved family destination; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Timothy D. Bradley Jr., Mayor of the Borough of Mount Joy, on behalf of our citizens, do hereby recognize the faithful service, creativity, and invaluable contributions that Jan Betty—our cherished “Miss Jan”—has made to the Borough of Mount Joy with a lifetime of devotion to its families and children.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and have caused the Official Seal of the Borough of Mount Joy to be affixed this 16 day of August 2025 to be “Jan Betty Day.”
