Think of the Milanof-Schock Library, and you might think of books, of course. But the Mount Joy organization offers much more for the community, including opportunities for local students to showcase their talents.

That’s what will be happening when the library, located at 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, hosts its annual Kraybill Mennonite School Art Show. It will be held on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be an opportunity to meet and greet some of the artists from 10 to 11 a.m.

“We love to support our community and the children in it even more,” said Jan Betty, director of children and youth for the library. “This gives the children a way to have their creativity recognized, and the library is always excited to have some folks come into the library who may not have visited us before.”

Betty worked with Bre Martinez, the Kraybill art teacher, whom Betty describes as “marvelously creative.”

The pair have worked together for a few years now, and it’s been a great collaboration, Betty said.

“(Martinez) has selected the art being presented,” Betty shared. “She is so easy to work with, and even more importantly, she is so much fun.”

Art pieces will include clay, color theory projects, Andy Warhol-inspired self-portraits and middle school projects depicting the “Creation of Adam.” Students in grades three through eight will have artwork on display.

The idea for the event came about after a Kraybill parent attended the Donegal Art Show held annually at the library and inquired about doing a similar show featuring Kraybill students. Kraybill Mennonite School is open to students in prekindergarten through eighth grade and is located in Mount Joy, within the footprint served by the library.

“The kids have really put great effort into the art this year – as always – and the results are amazing,” Betty said. “It is so nice to support our children in their efforts. We will have a roomful of art representing the talents of many students.”
